Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett is open year-round (some zones), but each season reveals a completely different face of the forest. This guide tells you exactly what to expect, which zones are open and what wildlife is most active โ€” month by month.

๐Ÿฅถ Winter โ€” November to February

Best Season
Temp: 4โ€“22ยฐCCrowds: HighZones Open: All core + buffer

Why Visit in Winter

Winter is universally considered the best time to visit Jim Corbett. Clear skies, cool temperatures and excellent visibility create ideal safari conditions. Tigers and leopards are more active during the day, and the Dhikala grassland is at its most photogenic โ€” dry golden grasses and sharp morning light.

November and December bring migrating waterfowl to the Ramganga reservoir and Kosi River โ€” thousands of ducks, geese and waders alongside resident crocodiles and elephants. January is the coldest month (4ยฐC at dawn in Dhikala) but also the most spectacular for photography.

  • All zones open: Bijrani, Dhikala, Jhirna, Garjiya, Dhela, Durga Devi
  • Tiger sighting probability: High (especially Bijrani, Dhikala)
  • Elephant herds: Large congregations at Dhikala reservoir
  • Birds: Peak migratory waterfowl, raptors
  • Temperature: 4โ€“22ยฐC. Carry layers for 6 AM safaris
Jungle Junction Tip

Book Dhikala permits 45โ€“60 days in advance for December and January โ€” they sell out. Bijrani is easier to book but also fills quickly on weekends. Contact us to manage the permit queue for you.

โ˜€๏ธ Summer โ€” March to June

Good Season
Temp: 22โ€“42ยฐCCrowds: ModerateZones Open: Core + buffer

Best for Tiger Sightings

Paradoxically, May and June โ€” the hottest months โ€” often deliver the best tiger sightings in Corbett. As water sources dry up, all wildlife concentrates at the remaining waterholes. A parked jeep near a major waterhole in May will see more wildlife in 3 hours than a full day's driving in December.

The forest is dry and brown but deeply atmospheric. Temperatures peak at 40โ€“42ยฐC in June โ€” book the earliest possible morning slot and avoid afternoon safaris in these months.

  • Peak tiger and leopard sighting season (Mayโ€“June)
  • All core zones open until June 15
  • Early morning mandatory โ€” 35ยฐC+ by 9 AM in summer
  • Good for bird breeding season (Marchโ€“May)
Jungle Junction Tip

For summer visits, we depart for safari at 5:30 AM and return by 10:30 AM. Afternoon activities are shifted to the river and shaded forest areas. The bonfire evening programme is at its best in the cool nights of March and April.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Monsoon โ€” July to October

Specialist Season
Temp: 25โ€“35ยฐCCrowds: Very LowZones Open: Jhirna + Dhela (buffer)

The Lush, Quiet Season

All core zones close July 15 for monsoon โ€” Bijrani, Dhikala, Garjiya and others reopen November 15. However, Jhirna Zone and the buffer zones (Dhela, Sitabani, Phato) remain open and provide excellent year-round safari access.

Monsoon Corbett is extraordinarily beautiful โ€” 15 shades of green, waterfalls, mist on the ridges and a dramatic quality of light that photographers cherish. Birdwatching peaks in Augustโ€“September with breeding season and early migrants.

  • Only Jhirna (core) and buffer zones are open
  • Crowd levels at their absolute lowest
  • Green forest: most photogenic season for landscape
  • Birdwatching peaks (Augโ€“Sep)
  • Sloth bear most active in Jhirna
Jungle Junction Tip

Monsoon is our quietest and most atmospheric time. Rooms are at their most affordable, the forest is beautiful and we never turn away a guest who's happy to embrace the rains. A Jhirna safari in July morning mist is genuinely unforgettable.
